Brunswick Bank

Architectural synergy that perfectly reflects Brunswick.

Brunswick Bank by MOS Architects is a contemporary reflection of Brunswick history and evolution. A perfect architectural synergy fusing old with new.

The historically significant former heritage bank was originally built in 1913 and is thoughtfully nestled amongst glass curtained walling. This harmonious backdrop has been meticulously designed by MOS to complement the period detail and form of the original bank.

The two residential buildings are connected via elevated walkways on all levels. Residents can unwind on the second-floor podium level, a common area with fixed seating, bathed in sunshine and extensively landscaped.

The generous space between the buildings not only offers a secluded internal aspect to all units, but opens up the heart of the building to allow natural light, cross-ventilation and outlook to both sides of every apartment. These connected, open spaces create a sense of community and form a tranquil oasis set apart from the outside hustle and bustle.

The Bauhaus inspired curved elements on the exterior provide a gentle contrast with the flat face, and angular elements of the original bank and complement the arched openings in the heritage facade. External materials have been selected to present a contemporary response to the area’s historic and industrial heritage, with red brick, concrete and steel.

The restrained and considered palette used for exterior and interior finishes ensures aesthetic longevity and graceful ageing.  Green initiatives include a 21Kw solar system to offset electricity use in the car park and other common areas and 20,000 litre rainwater storage, to be  re-used on site.

Brunswick Bank is truly boutique in both its size and design and unique in its history.

Brunswick living redefined.

Kate Roach has encapsulated the spirit of Brunswick, combining an understated industrial-luxe aesthetic with a playfulness expressed through colour and texture. The Earthy tones and textures create a sense of cocooning luxury.

The refined modern industrial approach has been achieved though exposed concrete ceilings, terrazzo tiled splashback and benchtop slabs. Black matt fixtures with pale oak flooring and joinery balance the tones. This approach is accentuated with a playfulness in the colours and textures that pay homage to the heart and soul of Brunswick and bring an earthiness, warmth and personality to the generous and light filled living spaces. Cognac tones are featured through the mosaic tiles in the bathroom and texture introduced in the rippled panelling within the custom made kitchen joinery.

Each apartment floor plan optimises open plan living and is enhanced with the following features:

  • Full height windows bring the outside in
  • Neutral interior colour palette with feature cognac coloured accent
  • Exposed concrete ceilings
  • Timber floorboards
  • Terrazzo slab benchtops
  • Terrazzo tiled splashback
  • Matte black tapware
  • Feature cognac mosaic tiles in bathrooms
  • Polished concrete textural effect to selected walls
  • Integrated study desk joinery
  • Welcome station, display shelving, built in living room entertainment joinery (optional)
  • Automated blinds
  • Integrated French door fridges (optional)
  • Double glazed windows
  • Balcony planters/outdoor planting/landscaping
  • Solid timber feature entry doors

Brunswick is a lively, vibrant and colourful community, just 6km north of Melbourne’s CBD with three train stations and three separate tram lines make getting in and out of the city breeze. It is a truly diverse suburb that mixes hip inner-suburban alternative culture with an evolving population of immigrants bringing food, music and traditions from around the world.

Brunswick is multicultural, traditional and eclectic. It holds a hidden bounty of vintage shops, artisanal giftware, Middle-eastern bakeries and book shops. Nestled amongst local gems serving traditional Middle-eastern, African and Mediterranean foods are endless choices of sophisticated restaurants, cafés and bars offering unique cuisines, craft beers and cocktails.

Fashion, art and shopping collide on Sydney Road with hidden gems like Mr Kitly, groceries from Barkly Square, swimming at the Brunswick Baths or catching an exhibition in the Town Hall’s Counihan Gallery.

Walking and cycling trails provide easy access to plenty of green space. Follow the rippling waters and enjoy the birdsong among the hectares of natural bushland along Merri Creek and visit the gardens of CERES Community Environment Park. Meandering bike lanes will have you exploring Princes Park, Royal Park and all the way down to Yarra Bend.

It’s hard to pick the best thing to love about the inner-city lifestyle offered by Brunswick Bank. This happens when there’s a fantastic mix of young and old; gorgeous traditional Victorian homes, stunning new townhouses, shopping, fashion, pubs and bars, independent artists and designers, all coming together to create an experience that is uniquely Brunswick.

A creative, connected community.

If you love bohemian culture, live music, multicultural community and a strong creative vibe Brunswick is the place to be. The main thoroughfare, Sydney Road, is an eclectic bustle with history and character. A zippy bike ride will take you on a tour through industrial art studios, workshops and galleries, emerging designer and vintage fashion, live music venues, through to quiet leafy streets, parks and reserves.

Great food is life in Brunswick. And great coffee even more so. With trendy and eclectic settings and serious coffee credentials the café culture is lively. Code Black Coffee roasting house is one of Melbourne’s most established and sublime cafés and Ray’s Café is as vibrant and diverse as the hearty menu.

It is not only the number of cafés and restaurants that makes the area exciting, it’s the extraordinary diversity. From authentic tacos and barbacoa at Los Hermanos Mexican Taqueria, Indian regional street food at Bhang, Asian-fusion with a modern Australian twist at Tom Phat, to the local deli’s, bakeries, green grocers and specialty food stores that provide traditional and local flavour. The locals all know A1 bakery, the Sydney Road fixture delivering, alongside the traditional Middle-eastern groceries Lebanese pizzas, haloumi and the sweetest of treats.

The nightlife thrives with a tapestry of destination venues. Discover Joey Smalls a nightclub/bar hosting live internationals and DJs that spin funk, soul, house, hip-hop and disco late into the night and Howler a former wool store turned bar, arts hub and live music venue with an extensive and varied beer list. There’s also the Cornish Arms, a vegan friendly venue with a rooftop bar that has the best view in Brunswick, and you just know the cocktails will be great at a bar called Atticus Finch.

The shopping here is fun with creative and innovative designers moving in. Order a pair of custom fitted designer jeans from the unassuming but fabulous Dejour Jeans. Learn the re-emerging skills of cheese-making, sourdough baking or bee-keeping at the all-things-artisanal store, Bee Sustainable or treat your favourite people with curious gifts, homewares, bric-a-brac and vintage treasures from Hope Street Space.

Just around the corner in Nicholson Street is the East Brunswick Village Commercial Precinct. This massive urban renewal project offers boutique shopping, a market-style Coles, cafés and an artisanal bakery with more to come in the future including exciting new bars, restaurants, a pharmacy
and gym.
